Answered Thanks - Need an Insurance Appraisal for 1984 944
I have a 944 that is in showroom condition with 31,000 miles. My insurance company wants an independent appraisal of the car's true replacement value. Does anyone know someone who does classic car appraisals.

Lawrence- have you looked into Hagerty insurance? There are two postives that stand out over normal car insurance.
1- Because you probably have your car garaged and drive it very little (less than 5k/year), the insurance is dead cheap. 2- You decide the total loss value of the vehicle. Want to insure your $7k Porsche for $25,000? Fine. No inspection needed. I have a 1989 951 that, according to Excellence Mag, has a current value of no more than $11k. Through Hagerty, you chose the value you wish to insure the car for (in my case, it's insured for a $16k total loss) and you can change the value any time you wish. I pay about $500/year. I looked at every angle and found, for classic/exotic cars, no advantage staying with my long time home/auto insurer and every reason to go with Hagerty. |

Have you ever had a claim? I know one PCA member that had a problem with Hagerty.

No, I haven't. However, I have had numerous problems with State Farm and Allstate with my daily drivers over the years. Considering the number of other people I know that have had poor insurance payment/service, the fact that insurance companies do everything they can to avoid paying a claim or paying as little as possible and the fact that they lose money every time they pay a claim, we should consider this business as usual, for the most part.
I must believe it would be WORSE with an insurance co. that does not normally deal with classic cars, so why pay more for a system that is not set up to deal with cars like ours? |

Back a few years, I had a Honda dealership install lowering springs and align my Honda Prelude. Later, I hit a curb in a parking lot. I got it back after repairs, but the damn car would not drive straight, even though according to the dealership and State F*rm, the alignment was "within spec". SF denied further repairs as they claimed the lowering springs caused the driveability problems before the accident.
1. The alignment spec sheet from after the accident showed the car was actually WAY out of spec. 2. The SF adjuster AND the Honda Service manager lied, telling me they had no record previous alignment spec sheets. I found the dealership actually does keep full records of previous alignments, and I fooled another service manager into giving them to me. 3. Even after proving the car was perfectly in spec after installing the lowering springs, SF still denied the claim and closed the file, refusing to talk with me further on the subject 4. Honda refused to service my car anymore. Yep. Can't even take it there for an oil change! How does that grab ya? Like a good neighbor, State Farm will borrow your tools and never give them back. How do you think they would treat you and your 26 year old car with no book value? |

State Farm Horror Story
I have had Hartford for 20 years and have never had a problem with a claim. However, I know that I may have a problem if this car is damaged.
So far, I never received a response from PCA's Valuation Program. I will check the reviews on classic car insurance companies tonight. I still want to get an independent car appraisal. I will try calling some classic car dealers and one of my fraternity brother's relatives for input. This may be a moot-point. I met a Porsche enthusiast at the 48 hours weekend in Sebring. She asked me if the 944 was for sale. I told her to give me a call with she was really interested in the car. Well she called back. Thank you for your valued input. |
